In the nineteenth century, teachers in the United States were often provided room and board and very little cash. Families whose children attended the school would contribute to the support of the teacher by providing housing, goods and services. Taking an apple to school for the teacher is a gesture symbolic of this arrangement. (An "apple-polisher" was trying to get special attention from the teacher.)
