  • The sound of a slap in the face! Actually, the riddle is one of a number of Zen Buddhist riddles (they have a proper name, but it eludes me). The idea is that there is no answer, and so in the attempt to find an answer you elevate your level of thinking to a higher plane. But most people tend to approach it logically, and say something along the lines of "Well, half the sound of two hands clapping, obviously". Another western approach is to rapidly clench and unclench one fist so that the fingers smack against the palm, thereby "clapping".
  • This is one of the most famous beginnings to a Zen koan in the West, though it is relatively recent. A koan is akin to a mini-catechism, though where in Christian catechisms, the content (answers) is more important, in Zen Buddhism, the process of working out the proper responses to the koan is emphasized as the movement towards enlightenment. The student's wrong responses are punished somehow. The student is eventually supposed to work out the response to this initial question as standing in front of the questioner and thrusting one arm, palm out, straight at the questioner. The questioner then continues with the rest of the koan.
  • A sound can not be produced in text form, therefore this question can not be answered truly on this site. A simile may be given to give the question asker as a guideline on how to answer the question themselves, eg. One hand clapping sounds like the four fingers on your hand striking your palm. The question asker then must take this knowledge and apply it themselves and only then will the question truly be answered.
  • The sound you produce when you snap your fingers - only one hand but a 'clapping' sound.
  • Nothing- Sound waves need to be produced to create sound !
  • The sound of a clap is a variable concept, two hands clapping would have a variation of the sound made by one hand clapping but as the term clap is applied to both it is seen that the sound created by any clap is the same basic concept. If there term clap is applied to any action then the sound must therefore be the same as any other action that the term clap is applied to.

  • Just because you put one word in capitals doesn't mean this question has an answer. It's still rhetorical. Although obviously Bart Simpson would just clap his fingers against his palm.
  • This IS the sound of one hand clapping. The ancient riddle has now been solved.
