  • Destructive interference is relatively easy with long wavelengths because you can arrange for the phases to be 180 degrees opposite. At the high end of the audible range the wavelengths are less than 1 inch -- so it's difficult to get perfect phase inversion to cancel things out. When many frequencies are involved (as is typical) it would be very difficult. Even noise-canceling headphones (a much more controlled scenario than you propose) tend to reduce rumble but not higher-pitched extraneous sounds.
