I think that condo boards are more about controlling and manipulating people than about helping them live together in harmony, in my experience. Sure, regulate that maintenance must be done, quiet must be maintained and trash must be picked up. But when you start keeping people from hanging out laundry, you are hurting the environment by forcing them to use dryers. When you keep them from planting flowers, you are keeping them from brightening their neighbors hearts. When you keep them from having grills and parties, you are keeping them from developing a sense of community. And when you force them to have white curtains so that all the windows in the building match, you destroy their souls. People need to be individuals. As long as they aren't hurting anyone, what is the purpose except to feel power over someone?

It's an aesthetics thing. They want all the buildings to look the same. I do agree with you that it's unfair. Whatever happened to the land of the free? Ben Franklin would scoff if he could see some of the unnecessary laws we live under today. I would suggest that you sell the condo and buy a house, but some neighborhoods have similar rules (i.e. you can't have a clothesline in your yard).

When you buy a condo, you are agreeing to these things, so you better read the fine print BEFORE you decide to buy. If you don't like the rules, buy elsewhere.
