They are that expensive here also... I buy them at Trader Joes and they are a bit cheaper there... I like to think of happy chickens also... I always buy free range...

You gotta pay for the good stuff. Thats the way it is, way it always will be.

There is probably some increase in costs. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that much of the "healthy" food costs more because people will pay the price, thinking that it is much better for them, the environment, the animal, etc.

Yes that is very normal, but there is a reason for the extra cost and it's worth it! Basically, free range eggs from from chickens who are NOT pumped with steroids, and do not spend their entire lives in a cage. Regular eggs, are cheap because... * The chickens are pumped with steroids, making them lay eggs 3 times the normal rate than regular chickens. * The chickens require nearly no care, they spend their short lives in a cage, laying eggs and having feed dropped in front of them with a machine so they dont starve. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Free range chickens live about 5 years longer than the factory chicken, because of this mistreatment factory chickens experience, they usually die of exhaustion after 2 years. I encourage everyone to buy free range meat and eggs. The fact it is free range and organic, means the animal did not experience mistreatment before you got your product. The hen that laid your free range eggs DID have a good life! Im glad you bought them despite the price. :)

For several reasons, the housing requirements are much greater for free range, since they need much more room to move about. That takes more money to build, to care for and even for taxes. Plus they usually feed them better quality feed, organic hopefully. And then the charge more because they don't sell as many of them and need to make some kind of profit. I'm sure if they were the eggs of choice, then the price would go down quite a bit, though never as low as battery chicken eggs.
