Why can't the Space Shuttle land in the rain?

Normal air craft have the option of varying engine power as needed when landing in adverse weather connlditions. If necessary, they can pull out of the landing pattern and go around for another try. However, with the shuttle this is not an option. It is a glider--.and not a very good one at that. So, they only have one chance to get it right. Therefore, they only try to land it under ideal conditions.
