  • Actually, there are 44 monarchies in the world right now. If you take out the one Empire (Japan), the one country with a Paramount Chief as monarch (Fiji), the three principalities (Andorra, Lichtenstein, and Monaco), and the one Grand Duchy (Luxembourg) that leaves you with 35 countries with either a reigning Queen or King. Of those 35 countries, 20 have reigning Queens and 15 have reigning Kings. That’s different than the count of people who are reigning Queens or Kings, though. (Nancy had those numbers right on the money.) Three reigning Queens hold 20 countries between them: Queen Elizabeth II has 16 (one in Europe, nine in North America and the Caribbean, one in South America, and five in Oceania), Queen Margrethe II has 3 (two in Europe and one in North America), and Queen Beatrix I has one (in Europe). (The Faroe Islands and Greenland are hard to count here, though, as they are both self-governing territories of the Kingdom of Denmark. Greenland, though, recently took a step further along the road to complete independence than the Faroes have.)
