  • You achieve your goal only to find out that it's not what you wanted!
  • My favorite one is the one that involves the turtle and the sprinter. Let's say that you start both the turtle and the runner at the same time on a 1/4 mile straight-line course. The turtle can cover 1/20 of a mile per second; the runner can travel half the distance to the finish line every second. Who wins? . . . . The turtle. Why? After the first second, the turtle has gone 1/5 of the way, and the runner has gone half way. After the second second, the turtle has gone 2/5 of the way, and the runner has gone 3/4 of the way. After the third second, the turtle has gone 3/5 of the way, and the runner has gone 7/8 of the way. After the fourth second, the turtle has gone 4/5 of the way, and the runner has gone 15/16 of the way. After the fifth, the turtle is done, and the runner has gone 31/32 of the way. The turtle wins! This is the paradox of always dividing something in half; in theory, you always have a half left to divide further. So the paradox part also includes the fact that the sprinter NEVER reaches the finish line.
