ANSWERS: 10
  • In ancient times Alexander the Great and then Trajan. In modern times Omar Bradle.y
  • Sun-Tzu
  • Maximus Decimus Meridius, you know, Gladitor. I think the history books can't even tell us this answer. It's all subjective based on the goals at the time, the people, how he treated his armies, how he dealt with superiors and how ethical he was. Others may feel the greatest general was the one who won the most battles, but what were the effects left on the society that was defeated. Another could think the best general has the most loyalty from his troops. It's a great question and one to provoke thought and even one for a great debate, but I think the answer will be subjective to the one doing the answering.
  • Alexander the Great. It's right there in his name!!
  • Ghengis Khan would rate highly if he was a general. But he wasn't. So I have to be somewhat biased and vote for my 5th great grandfather. The most hated man in the deep south the the US. None other than William Tecumseh Sherman. No other general in the military forces has accomplished what he did in such a short period of time; be it effectiveness, gain of realty, damage, and winning the war. Was he well liked? Hell no! But he shortened the war more than we shall ever know and probably saved multitudes an both sides by doing what he did. Talk to me!
  • My vote goes for Admiral Horatio Nelson. (Well not a general but admiral - the naval equivalent.) At a time when England ruled the waves due to the skill and courage of her sea-captains, he was the undisputed greatest of them all. A brilliant tactician and leader of men. A legend in his own time and a real-life hero if ever there was one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horatio_Nelson,_1st_Viscount_Nelson
  • Alexander the Great. Definitely. :)
  • Bernard Law Montgomery.
  • Alexander the Great gets my vote, for developing the theory of tactical engagements.
  • That would be Alexander the Great; of course who could overlook Hadrian of Carthage, his strategies are required learning
