What do the symbols on the LDS temple garment mean?

This is something that no faithful Latter-day Saint will discuss in an open forum such as this beyond saying that they remind us of the covenants that we make with God in the temple.

1. Mark of the Square (right breast): represents "exactness and honor" in keeping the commandments and covenants of God. 2. Mark of the Compass (left breast): symbolizes "an undeviating course leading to eternal life; a constant reminder that desires, appetites, and passions are to be kept within the bounds the Lord has set; and that all truth may be circumscribed into one great whole." 3. Navel Mark: represents "the need of constant nourishment to body and spirit." 4. Knee Mark: suggests "that every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is the Christ". I don't understand what is so secretive about the symbol meaning. It doesn't sound like anything bad/scary/I just don't get it as why it couldn't be discussed.

Hmmm, I'm mormon and Joseph Wirthlin's answer is correct, and yes, we aren't supposed to be talking about it in public. The real reason? It's sacred, as is all the ordinances of the temple. It's so sacred, it deserves the utmost respect, honor, and dignity. I believe sex is the same way. That's why you won't find me talking about my intimate relationship with my wife. It's so special, to talk about it with just anyone would be degrading it and her. I honor her and love her beyond anything else on Earth. The same feelings go towards God and his holy temple. There really isn't much more to it than that. (AFTER READING THIS, I really want to clarify so that nobody misunderstands, there isn't any relation between sex and the temple in the mormon religion) :-)

I've seen the darn things and examined the symbols. They are supposed to protect the wearer. I helped my bf throw his in the trash. I wonder what the trash guys thought when they saw them or the dumpster divers?
