• The new testament really is nothing compared to the old. Jesus doesn't seem like such a bad guy, but I reject him just because he is said to have come from the old testament God. I don't need any salvation from such an unrighteous character. I used to be christian, but I've been free for about a year now. It wasn't easy quitting those crazy beliefs but the effort was well worth it.

• fair enough, ive never relly been religious. Enjoy reading the books through. The one thing that impresses me is that some of the stories (from all the books) are good moral views that are still valued today, The problem is people see these books as literal and its just isnt the case.

• what do you mean by secularism? wiki says something like "believing church and state should be seperate", but I as a christian also believe that I have no right to stop atheists from commiting abortion. YES i believe abortion is bad, but NO I have no right to force others to believe the same, no matter how much I am against it. So if I, as christian through and through, believe what wiki says a secularist believes, then what do YOU believe when you say you believe in secularism?

• Because it has made so many people in beleive it. It has invariably been a great sucess in making people Chistians. I used to be a Christian but when I was about 19 I realised that there is no evidence it is Gods word. If God was to come to me then I may beleive it but as far as I am concerned it is rules to live by devised by many different people and hence many of its books are different in nature from others. My God is not similar to the God described in the Bible.

• I think the part of the Bible which I would tend to agree with is God creating man in his own image. This supports my belief that humans hold all the answers and need not to be controlled by a God. If I was to go deep into my beleifs I beleive that every human can potentially allmighty omiscient and omipresent and if we live the right way we will discover this. I beleive we created this world in a sence to realise ourselves and in a life after death in a spiritual world. I do adopt some christian values but more because I beleive in karma and see it as a natural law rather than beleiving in God in the essence of a person.

It is the fact that people think they will be rewarded for it that they beleive but I will not make any decisions based on that. If Christianity makes gives someone a better quality of life then its good but if it causes people any problems it is not good. I guess I agree with you to some extent but do not come quite as far as to be a Christian.

• I’ve shortly tried to work out the whole deal about laws and rules(notice the difference between those!): The bible describes LAWS, just as laws of physics, and then shows how it is best to live in accordance with those laws. In the physical world nobody has to tell you that you shouldn't try walking on walls, you immediately notice it doesn't work that way. The spiritual world is a bit less easy to determine, and that is why God showed us those LAWS. But this is not a RULE to live by, just as it is not a rule that you shouldn't walk on walls. You can try working 24/7, but you'll get a burnout in no time, that's why God says take a break every 7th day. It's like that with all the LAWS in the bible. it's simply the way things work, and going against it can result in unpleasant things such as burnouts and more devestating things. For the rest the RULES in the bible are the old testament way for people to show God they honor Him. But the new testament clearly teaches that Jesus fulfilled all of the RULES, and the only rule left is to love God and to love your neighbour as yourself. The actual LAWS are still in place, it’s still not a good idea to walk on walls, but we no longer have to uphold the RULES to show God we love Him, we now have better ways to do that since we can have a personal relationship with Him (as part of this relationship God works in us to help us uphold the rules because we WANT to, and not because we HAVE to). Now if the bible was just a lot of rules to live by, and the only rules to live by are love God and love your neighbour, that would make a very thin bible! So what’s on all the other pages?? Basically two things: History(stories to help us understand human nature, stories to help us understand God’s nature, stories to help us understand what’s happening in the world, etc etc) and advice(how are we to live if there are no rules? How can i have a personal relationship with God? How can i love my neighbour even if he burnt down my house? Etc etc). What you say is comparable to saying an Aerospace-engineering student studies to work as a judge or lawyer in court, while in fact that student is learning how to work with the LAWS that are in place, and how to do awesome things with that knowledge. The bible isn’t about rules, it’s about who God is, and who we are, and how things work in the world. Hope this helped ;)

• no, they are the ten Laws of spirituality by my books. But for instance: God never says you have to rest on sunday, He simply says work 6 days, rest one day. I actually rest on saturday and go to church and do homework and stuff like that on sunday. Going to church is fun, but as someone else pointed out sleeping in has it's unique qualities :P. Furthermore keeping God the #1 priority (1st law) is a good way to live your life, and keeps things in perspective. Something else: people simply can't handle idols. In all cultures i know people start bowing to statues and almost worshiping it, even in catholic history, which is nonetheless christian in my books. That is why God warns us not to make idols or images (2nd law). The laws are to protect us, not to govern us. If everyone hated their parents, old people would be neglected and die early, but that means my children will disrespect me also, and i will die early as well. So "respect your parents and you'll live longer" is kind of obvious actually. All laws are like this, and they do not frighten me, just as i am not frighened by the laws of physics: i love to study them and play around with them to end up with AWESOME results!

• There was a routine George Carlin did where he distilled the commandments down to one. I think it was something like "don't screw up". Still if you look at them as written, they even try to control your thinking like "don't covet your neighbor's wife". You can choose not commit adultery but how can you not look at a desirable woman (or man depending on your taste) and not have that though cross your mind? I think that's why Muslims cover up their women. I, on the other hand, can't stop wondering what's under the robes.

• I think the ten commandments have nothing to do with control. Don't covet your neighbor's wife is also to protect you from yourself and it is definately something you can control. thinking "that's a beautiful women" is very different from desiring or coveting. desiring and coveting leads to, or sometimes comes from, jealousy or even action to take that which you desire. in comparison (i like analogies, sry :)) it would be like saying "don't walk on the edges of High buildings for too long, or you might be tempted to jump down someday" the actual law is that of gravity: jumping will cause you to fall and hit the ground, but the warning is to avoid the risk. God's not saying your not allowed to think "that is a beautiful women", He is telling you that thinking it long enough without self-control may result in "i whish she were MY women" which eventually will lead to "what can i do to make her my women".

  The dictionary defines covet: To wish for longingly; the synonym is desire. I desire a Cadillac and plan to buy one, I am not going to steal it.
  
  If the commandment were a suggestion, you would be correct but it explicity says "do not covet..." therefore it is thought control.
  
  The bible is filled with these types of orders.

• Like I said (thought I was clear..) the rules are no longer of any significance other than that they explain how things work. The Israelites HAD to obey the rules to show they respected God. That is why it says "thou shalt" and "thou shalt not", because for the Israelites that's how it was: rules to obey, and otherwise "suffer the consequences". After Jesus died and rose for us the old covenant (live by the rules and I’ll bless you) is GONE and we have a new covenant: that we can have a personal relationship with God through acceptance of Jesus' sacrifice. This means we no longer have to live by the laws and rules, as long as we live with God. HOWEVER the laws and rules explain us how things work and how God works and eventhough we are no longer judged like the Israelites where, it still is God’s preference so to speak. But instead of living by the rules because we have to we now grow into relationship with God. Just as, for example, a wife hates it when her husband leaves dirty socks lying around and eventually he stop doing it to please her (I hope..) so it is with God: there are no rules, but you learn to live the way He want’s you to live because you love Him. So the laws in the bible explain how the principles work, but we are no longer forced to live by them.

• so @ buttercup: only non-christians are judged by the law, the only thing you'll be judged by is whether or not you love God and your neighbour. And next to that whether or not that was visible in your lifetime, but i think that's what it talks about with the house of straw and the one of stone, they both get tested by the fire, but eventhough the straw one gets burnt up, you're still saved.
  @ Ron C: the bible IS filled in the old testament, but the New Testament clearly shows everything i just explained. God doesn't want to thought-control you, he wants you to grow in relationship THROUGH WHICH you will start to love doing the things He loves. This is not a forcefull change, but a gentle proces.

• Thank you all. I understand that you see, especially the new testament, as a guideline by which you can serve god with love. Much like a dog learns to do it's business outside. First because that's it's true nature and secondly because it pleases his master. But if he makes a mistake, the master rubs his nose in it. It doesn't mean the master loves the dog less, he just doesn't want the mess in the house.

  That is what I cannot accept. If there is a God, I believe, that he is uninterested in what an individual. He tested Job cruelly but punished the Israelites as a people. Christ, "loved" everyone and wanted peace but again, the punishment was hellfire for those that don't tow the line. So, to me, the change in the new testament is that it went from mass punishment to individual punishment. That is no improvement.

• Finally, faith that cannot be tested like physical laws only serves to make the believer wonder, "where are my mistakes?" Rather than question a real person, you have to question an imaginary god that only answers from within. It is very easy to convince yourself that the inner voice is god rather than your personal inclination. Again all of this cannot be tested and the only way to be sure is to physically test the voice. I don't think we need god to do that. I'm happy that you guys are comfortable with that, but I cannot and will not blame god for my problems and ask "him" for my solutions.

• @ buttercup: God doesn't primarely want you to make sacrifices. yes,sometimes He asks us to give up specific things, but that is not the basis of christianity. The basis of christianity is you can do absolutely nothing to earn your way into heaven. All you can do is accept Jesus' sacrifice. Once that's 'taken care of' all life is about is getting back to where adam and eve were: having a personal relationship with God. There is nothing God wants more than to have a relationship with you, and me, and everybody else. For what other reason would He have created us? He sent His son sothat we may be saved, but to what end does he want to save us? The answer is relationship. the bible says doing the greatest things, without having love, means nothing at all. I used to read my bible because it was important, i used to pray because it was important, but God showed me how silly that is.

Jumping off a building will kill you, but that's consequence, not punishment. Secondly nobody goes to hell for being a bad person, they only go to hell for not having a personal relationship with God. I think your image of hell is very off, and unbiblical at the very least. You should read and watch the sources of this question: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/6474245 , and reading my answers and comments may help as well, since that is all about hell, who go there, and why. You criticize something you don't seem to understand.

• The laws CAN be tested, you're just not looking. Japanese people live the longest, and it just so happens Japanese culture gives tremendous respect to elders (5th commandment proven), I believe it was the Russians who experimented with a 10-day week, 9 days work 1 day rest, and everybody got burnt out (4th commandment proven) People don't love God above all else instead they love themselves and money: capitalism was born. I'm no socialist, but in my eyes there's no denying what caused the current economic crisis(1st commandment justified). Like I said before: numerous religions with statues eventually start to worship the statues asif they are the gods themselves, rather than representatives (2nd commandment justified). You prove a law by stating you can predict what happens by using it, and showing your prediction happened. It just so happens God predicted these things more than 3000 years ago.
  I cannot prove that God spoke to me, but I know it turned my life around. I talk to myself alot, but it’s very different when God says something. Also God does many things in the physical world such as heal diseases, but i doubt you are willing to look into that.

• First of all, Dr. Tim Keller video, at Pater's suggestion, is excellent and earnest. Even he came close to admitting that much of the bible is allegorical rather than historical. He does claim that Jesus information came from eye witnesses. His view of hell is that it is a place where those who are sent there don't want to leave. That is the first time I heard that concept. All I can say is that if I were sent to hell, I would them believe there is a god, therefore I should get out of hell.

• Pater's description of the result from ignoring and cooperating with the 10 commandments is excellent, I may not agree with the cause and effect reasoning but, frankly, it was the most cogent explanation for belief in the commandments, Ive seen. Regardless, I am a long way from becoming a committed christian.

  I submit that absolutely nothing should be merely accepted by faith. All statements in the bible or any "authoritative book" must be challenged and tested. Further, I do not believe, despite Pater's best efforts, that god knows or cares what we do.

• Okay, if you haven't read my profile, let me paraphrase for you. I think organized religion is a blight on society. It interferes in the democratic process and seeks to control people for it's own gains. The bible is a collection of documents, with some (read as very little) historical truth and a lot of overtold hand-me-down stories that have lost their true meaning after being passed around for more than a millenia. Then, somebody comes along and edits it's content and re-writes the rest because they see how out of date it is, thus turning what little truth that it might have ever held into moot convenience. Honestly, I could care less what people believe as long as it doesn't affect my life. Unfortunately and unsurprisingly, it affects me wherever I go on a regular basis. It is my personal understanding that the bible, being too open to personal interpretation and too full of contradiction, has degraded christian belief into something nearly unrecognizable from Christ's teachings.

• Well, once the Holy Spirit reveals to you who God is, you start seing lots of things from a different perspective. Things that seem harsh and cruel of God fall into place and you see how He works and that line goes all the way from creation to revelations. God's love for me, and you, makes everything come together. But the cryptic part about it is that nobody who does NOT have the Holy Spirit can by themselves understand it. Even with the revelations God has given me i sometimes read something that at first doesn't fit the whole, doesn't fit a loving God, but thinking about it a bit more you find how it all fits perfectly.

• EXCELLANT Pater...as HE said, most will remain blind to the messages....even HIS CHOSEN...look at the PRIESTS who had Jesus killed...were they Holy,? i think not...the Holy Spirit is the HELP HE sends...HIS POWER ..and HE is very partial to who HE HELPS & COMFORTS...only those who trully want to know HIM....:)

• Well, I think it's not right to say He's partial. I tink it's more accurate to say He is willing to give to all, but only those who will use this precious gift as it was intended, and not to those who would misuse it.

• the GIFT is FREE and for ALL but there is no other word for it....it is not given to those who CHOOSE not to COME/UNDERSTAND...HE is and will be PARTIAL to those who use the GIFT as intended....not the ones who misuse...do u not agree ,on Judgement we ALL will be judged by 2 BOOKS? the book oF LIFE and THE WORD...we have to know it and understand it ..to TRULLY KNOW and UNDERSTAND HIM....HE was very PARTIAL at one time..to the Israelites...but once it was ACCOMPLISHED/ HIS PURPOSE for a Chosen.....HE stopped being partial ...as Jesus is for ALL...i think PARTIAL is good, its just that "HE wishes no man to PERISH"...partial is inevitable..:)

• HE sends HELP/UNDERSTANDING to those who are trying to DRAW NEARER to HIM...UNDERSTAND HIM...HE does not send HIS POWER fo help and comfort to each and every one....do u think Hitler was sent HIS HELP? HUSSEIN? BIN LADEN?....God will HELP us but we have to be WILLING to help ourselves to the GIFT...HE IS WILLING BUT WE HAVE TO BE ALSO..:)

• indeed, in that sense i agree ;). But partial to me sounds like He would be reserved, as in "He only reveals Himself partially", almost as someone afraid to reveal himself and therefor only shows his left pinky to start with. I think He is not reserved, but rather 'impatiently waiting' to reveal Himself (in a positive sense), yet as you say only reveals Himself to those who seek Him truly.

• the revealing/revelation ,is not a revealing of HIM, its the prophecy REVEALED of what is to come in this world before HE comes back and what will be done when HE does!
  the Israelites were HIS ultimate REVEALERS...one PURPOSE of a Chosen ...to make HIM known and keep HIM HOLY to the world until another PURPOSE was ACCOMPLISED ..the Savior for MAN...

• I just don't see the need for such secrecy of purposes, especially when HE is able to communicate them directly and discreetly with His trusted ones. It's all about trusting the angels here on earth. Sometimes they have a dangerous message to share in return. Daniel trusted the angels to protect Him. So why not every other Jim, Tim, Nik, Brian, Tom, Dick and Harry? Religion has become a game of speculation many are tired of playing without some reassurance that it wasn't and isn't ALL a joke.
  
  If HE is legitimate, He has no worries introducing Himself to me on a personal level, speaking directly to those who seek Him and have opened their heart to Him repeatedly. Ignored messages spawn anger, hurt and even fear in some. It's time to demystify the bible to those who ask, before all the churches of earth are nuked in the apocalypse that is sure to come, at least without the proper intervention by the one with the power to stop it.

• (dang, i can’t help myself from making such long comments, LOL)
  you pose an interesting case. When you talk about God not answering you and this being painful and aggrivating, I completely know how that is. For some reason God has been quite silent also to me. I've sought a face-to-face kind of meeting with Him for I think about 7 years, but He hasn't given it yet. The situation i mean is where i'm at a great worship service and everyone(or most) around me are touched spiritaully and many physically and many are lying down but I feel nothing, and feel left out. It hurts like hell :), and I've clearly noticed how that pain is like steam in a pressure vault, once you've got enough of it it'll explode with alot of anger. But I know He is there, and all the people around me ARE being touched. I'm not saying it's ALL authentic, but people I know and trust to be smart are also touched, so at least some of it is. And He HAS said things to me which really turned me around, but not with the frequency and intimacy I long for.

  Why? I don’t know; I’ve learned alot the past few years about having the right motivations, persuing and asking for the right things, God’s love for me, and lots of other things, but that’s all knowledge, and I want it to be practice! Who knows why He does the things He does and how or when? But i’m not giving up. Whether i’m just a modern-day Job, or there’s something going on that I don’t know about, I don’t know, but I know God is real. I forgot the details but in the bible there’s also a story of a prophet asking God for an answer and being frustrated for not getting it, only after some time did the angel appear to him giving him the help he needed. The angel said something like: “sorry, God sent me right away when you prayed, but satan’s forces tried to stop me, that’s why it took me so long.” Who knows why God doesn’t always answer, people don’t always heal, or why babies die? But I’ve seen too much of Him to have any doubt.

  For the rest the bible is clear: this earth is going down the drain, and He’s going to make a new one. The apocalyps IS sure to come, since it’s described in revelations :P. But it wouldn’t work just to inmestacably proove God’s existance. There are people in the world that will never accept God no matter what He does. There are also people that need only a soft breeze to be pushed in the right direction. The guy who shot kennedy believed he existed, knew many adored him, and that he had all the power in the States. But the guy shot him! You can describe God the same way: even if everyone knew He existed, knew how so many adored Him, knew He had all the power in the universe, there would still be an I think large group of people that absolutely hate Him. Prooving beyond doubt is not the sollution, because it will not make you love Him, and that’s what it’s all about in the end. Only those that seek Him will find Him, and for some people that search is long and hard, and for some people it is quick and easy, but for all life only really begins after they’ve found Him and grow in relationship.

• LOL...that's what keeps life interesting....How are things in Wales...I imagine we have almost the same climate..but this year we had a very long winter...snow right up until 01 April...and cold ...usually our winters are nothing but endless days of rain.....but it is sunny and warmer now...

• Justme, you are the problem. Interesting how you say that the bible is the devil's work. It truly is the work to mankind's enemies, but it wouldn't say it is the work of the devil. Don't forget the devil is slandered all throughout the bible, blamed for everything wrong. Obviously someone doesn't want us to know the truth.

• As a student of the bible I would disagree entirely, the theme of the bible is God and his creation man due to his sin breaking relationship with God. And God's God's plan to restore that broken relationship. That is certainly not eisogesis but exogesis at it's simplest level.
