Because the people who oppose same sex adoption are homophobic. They don't really care as much about solving the problem of unwanted children as they claim. Having two loving same sex parents would be much better than living in foster care or an orphanage.

Same sex adoption is not illegal. (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-gay_marriage_latmay06,0,4849042.story) However, it can cost $30-40,000 to adopt an unrelated child. Few people can afford that. There are so many orphans in Africa because of AIDS and war.

I'm assuming you are referring to same sex couples adopting children. Not sure where you hail from, but most places it is legal. Here in Canada it is legal and I'm pretty sure it's legal in many of the states of the US. However, just because it's legal doesn't make it easy. It may be more difficult for same sex partners to adopt because societal pressures on same sex partnerships and (here in Canada) marriages, make them more volatile. When doing the screening for adoption, stability in a partnership or marriage is examined very closely and some same sex relationships will not stand up to such intense scrutiny. None of my friends that are in same sex relationships have tried to adopt, but a friend and his wife have done so, and it was very expensive. They have had no regrets and are seriously contemplating adopting a sibling for their little girl, but both parents have well paying jobs and can afford the $30,000+ that it cost them to go that route. So far as "so many orphans" go, I feel it is more the expense of the process, rather than homophobic laws that is hindering this process. Hope this helps.

I am a foster parent and a gay male. It is not per-se a problem where I live - otherwise qualified singles and gays can foster and adopt. The issue of gay couples was not really a problem in my case because, although I am in a long-term (18 years now) relationship. I do not live with my partner - our jobs keep us separated.
