Cobain helped bring the Fender Mustang back to prominence as a viable guitar.
I don't know much about their accomplishments - I didn't catch on to the whole Nirvana thing until after cobain died.
I haven't really looked into them, or thought about their influences upon other bands. But I have the CDs and I love their music! They definitely had an influence upon me when I was growing up at the very least.
Nevermind, In utero and Unplugged are great albums, and they did what needs to be done sometimes, they brought back a rawness to a music scene that was becoming bland and safe.
First of all, they were an active band for more than 2 years. (1987–1994)
They became popular at a time when people were tired of the hair bands and stale pop music. Nevermind was an incredible album that just seemed to be released at a perfect time. I also read that Cobain was not comfortable with the sudden and huge popularity that came with the success of Nevermind.
I enjoy much of Nirvana's music and the Unplugged show that was on MTV shows the band having fun and playing songs that influenced them. I think they were the best rock band of the early 90's. I can't help but wonder what if Nevermind had only been moderately popular and where the band would have gone if Cobain hadn't died.
Their is no question that they influenced bands and musicians, but I find it strange that 'grunge' died a couple of years after Cobain died. Alternative rock has become too safe and mainstream.
love them. love cobain. loved grohl when he drummed for them. love their music, their image...
they were a great band & definitely reshaped the face of music in just two short years.
for me they were overrated then and still are today ... they had one good album and thats about it. If Cobain had of lived maybe they could have strung together another good album but I think they were one of the " short lived " bands who made an impact BUT that impact has been overblown
I've been thinking about Nirvana lately actually. They remind me of Creedence in a way that they completely define a generation and the songs are so familiar. I don't even own a Nirvana CD, never owned a tape. I often wonder why.
They stunk, they could hardly play their instruments and he could not sing very well. It wasn't music it was poetry.
At least the poets of the early ages like the 1950's and 1960's could play and sing well and had bands with totally competent musicians. Bob Dylan for instance. He did not sing well but he had a band who could play well and made his music listenable even with his horrible singing.
Clutch is 100 times the band. Nirvana was subject to mainstream pop sensation. They were a good band but the media propelled them.
I enjoyed much of their music, but I find each of their songs falls into one of two categories: great or garbage.
