You shorted it out. You created a very low-resistance circuit which, in accordance with Ohm's Law, drew a LOT of amps. In fact, more amps than could safely be drawn. You are lucky you didn't cause a fire. Sometimes, those things get hot enough to ignite grass or trees. Sometimes even hotter.
