Help answer this question below.
Intelligent reasoning and compassion.
Open-Mindedness.
People need to realize that "What I approve of" and "What should be allowed" are 2 completely different concepts.
Just because one individual doesn't approve of something like same-sex marriage/immigration/ gambling/whatever...doesn't automatically give them the right to denounce it for all people.
Creative thinking.
And not enough of a sense of humor about politics.
World view thinking. Americans seem to think America is the only country or people who count in the world. (Please don't downrate me for my opinion, it is not mean spirited just an observation).
Respect for different cultures and the people within them.

Common sense.
Patience. People in this country want everything done in an instant. Good results take time and sometimes that means the wait is more than a few minutes or seconds.
Informed opinions. People assume that merely because we're all entitled to our opinions, that all opinions are somehow intrinsically equal. Why don't you just go to your garbage man and ask for a medical opinion? I mean, you could go to your doctor, but what does he know?
I agree with a lot of the other answers here, but there's one that really stands out for me that I don't see listed.
"Freedom from ideology".
This is not normally what we think of when we talk about freedom. Everybody thinks freedom is a great thing, of course, and we all want more of it and want to protect it. But, what we usually don't notice is that the most impregnable prisons are not those imposed by dictators or correction systems, they're imposed by our own beliefs and ideas.
A belief system or set of ideas becomes a prison when we begin to think that we cannot function without it, when we grant it too much authority over our minds, when we let it explain everything (and everyone) to us, when we define our identity in terms of loyalty to it.
This is an extremely common kind of prison, most of the population is serving time for at least part of our lives. If we could turn some of our attention to freeing ourselves from these ideological traps, the problems they cause -- and the problems they fail to solve -- could be addressed much more easily.
acceptance of different people
Aside from EVERYTHING that was already mentioned, I say that America needs more hugs.

People will it the be the people in the "by the people" part of the "for the people, by the people" statment. Americans want others to take care of it and then whine when they don't like what is done.

Is anybody really a republican or democrat? Left/Right? I don't see why people like to define themselves into only these few categories.
