I need help to write a reference for someone applying for a deputy headship at a secondary school.

what is the question? What kind of things to say? If you do not know them in a professional capacity, you cannot comment on their professional issues. If you know them socially, you can only comment on things like reliability, dedication etc. But you can also mention their dedication to education, and the thoroughness with whcih they keep up to date with such affairs. If you know them through their work with another organisation (eg voulntary sector) then mention that, and their abilities to manage.... etc
