I don't know about the righteous part, but I believe most people think they are good.

This question assumed humans actually TRULY understood the meaning of the word "righteous". With the continuous bullyings, rape, tortures and murders of countless defenseless, innocent lives of other species by humans, righteousness is perhaps too difficult a concept to be realised or understood by a typical human being. Perhaps the intellectual capacity of the human species is not as evolved as once thought. Perhaps this word should be removed from the dictionaries since it's meaning is not understood by this species of animal at all ! Until we as a species learn to respect the lives of defenseless non-human beings, we'll also continue to apply the same subconscious, barbaric mentality to de-value the lives of other defenseless humans. This is the ultimate cause of endless wars among humans.

Yes. Every single group of folks, consider themselves to be the only virtuous folks in a world of sinners. From the Manhattan socialite, to the Afghani Warlord, to the Inuit hunter, all the way to the Tierra del Fuego indian. It's what allows folks to continue being arseholes.
