I think you might have a point. I was in Bali a few years ago, around the time of the Day of Silence ( a local festival). The day before, each village parades huge papier mache statues of good versus evil. Usually they are Hindu gods, but one really made me laugh. It was a business man in a suit, with a briefcase and a mobile phone...and he was screaming...I guess Bali is technology savvy after all! ROFL

It is strange how ubiquitous mobile phones have become - just ten years ago most people I knew did not have them. Now it is astonishing to think how we managed. How did you ever know where your friend was if they did not turn up to meet you? However, a lot of people turn their phones off or have time away from them (I have forgotten mine today), so it is still perfectly possible to have alone time and to think individually. And who knows? Perhaps the trend will start to decline in a few years and we will all get a bit more freedom from ring tones.
