    Quito, Ecuador

It might interest you to know that I crossed the equator in Sumatra, just north of the smaller city of Bukittinggi, north of Palembang, in 1978. It was marked by two columns with a world globe on top, upon which was written the words "Khattulistiwa| (Equator). It was in the middle of the jungle.

Cities that are at 0 degrees and a bit. None lie exactly on the equator form a city centre point of view.

    PONTIANAK, INDONESIA 0 05 S 109 16 E

    SORONG, INDONESIA 0 50 S 131 17 E

    KAMPALA ,UGANDA 0 19 N 35 25 E

    KISANGANI ,CONGO 0 33 N 25 14 E

All others are at least 1 degree or more away from the equator. Since 1 degree at the equator is a little over 111 kilometers, and the next nearest cities lie 1 degree or more away, these ones listed are "closest" to directly on.
