None are good for your 4 year old. She is too young. If you want a family dog that is great. Don't just get a dog for your child - get one because your family really wants a companion pet to enjoy. Check out the pounds. See what they have and which one responds to you and your daughter. The pounds also want your adoptive experience to be great so they will have evaluated the temperaments of the dogs they show you. One of the more laid back breeds is a Cocker Spaniel. Many of the Terriers are a bit hyper as are Jack Russels. Beagles tend to take off as they have natural hunting instincts. Possibly poodles but screen each. Naturally there are exceptions to the rule.

I have a boston terrier which is a lovely dog. She has never even tried to "play nip". I have owned cocker spaniels for many years and they seem to not tolerate children very well and also grooming is constant.
