Well Atheism is more focused on the idea that there is no all-powerful deity, or God. Humanism rejects any deference to super natural solutions to human problems. I would have to say the difference is the focus of the religion or philosophy. Humanism focuses on human issues, whereas Atheism focuses on the lack of God.

In regard to believing in God or A God, most Humanists I know think similarly to an Atheist and don't believe or, at least, don't dwell on whether or not one exists. They focus mostly on mankind and how we are, or should be, the primary source for garnering our scientific data, taking care of our neighbor, our earth and developing our human potential. What counts is the here and now as opposed to the hereafter. I think Atheists share much, if not all, of the same values.

Humanists have manifesto which binds them by their belief in humanity's ability to utilize our highest potential in order to create the best possible world, rather than defaulting to the will of a supernatural force. However; one should bear in mind that there are religious humanists. Atheism, simply describes the lack of deism. Here's a link to the Secular Humanist Manifesto: http://www.secularhumanism.org/index.php?section=main&page=declaration And here is the Religious Humanist Manifesto: http://www.americanhumanist.org/Who_We_Are/About_Humanism/Humanist_Manifesto_I

Some will some won't. There is no all encompassing guideline to what an atheist is or isn't. An atheist merely believes there is no god or gods, a humanist is concerned with the welfare of humans. They can co-exist perfectly.
