Technically viruses don't live. Without a host they're more like minerals than animals, and they can even be crystallized! The shelf life depends on whether or not they are exposed to things that would break down their structure, like sun, chemicals, radioactivity. Protected from these, they can potentially remain active for thousands or even millions of years.
