Don't simply read or memorize the material; stop periodically to review what you have read and to think of possible questions or applications. You might find it helpful to write short summaries of readings or class notes in your own words. Doing so may take extra time but will enable you to retain the material more effectively.

What I've found helpful is going the "multi-sensory" route: reading aloud runs it through the ears as well as the eyes. If it's really critical, I've read into a tape recorder and played it back while driving. Also, it sounds silly but I found that SINGING the text worked well. (This is not something to do in public, I would say... unless you're much braver than I) Another approach is to re-type the text while reading it aloud. This is good for fast typists. So I suppose if you type it in while recording your singing of the text all at the same time, you can max out your chances both of memorizing the content and being locked up in the loony bin at the same time... :-)

Make sure that what you're reading is interesting to you. You absorb more information if your concentration is good and you are in a comfortable setting.
