  • There's no "should" about it. Each band is different, each player is different, and each song is different. It isn't about finding "roles" for everybody, it's about making music, and doing what fits the music.
  • That is completely up to how the band wants to share the parts. If guitar players would have stuck with the concept of "lead guitar" and "rhythm guitar" that was popular throughout the late 1950's and through the 1960's, we would never have experienced such great guitar arrangements as Allman Brothers or Steve Vai's band. In some bands, one keyboard plays piano and one plays organ; in others, one plays piano & organ and the other plays synth, strings and brass. In other bands, the parts are split up as needed.
