I sort of figured the same thing, lol.

Pah, Pascal's Wager! The problem with Pascal's Wager is that God isn't going to think "Oh! You became a christian becuse of practicality, come on in!", if God does exist, he's a violent little guy, and if that's your attitude towards the big question, I doubt he'll let you in his clubhouse. How do "fellow-christians" react when they ask you "How did you find the Lord?" and you reply something like "Oh, I didn't find him, I'm just going with you guys because I can't think for myself and need insurance for that afterlife you guys go on about."?
-
You have faith because you are playing the odds? Sounds like something you could burn for. On a more serious note I am not sure why anyone has to prove anything to you or me.
-
Of course. However my belief, that there is no god, is such that I don't think I'm taking a risk. Hedging your bets is for agnostics.
-
No - maybe the bible is wrong, and the real God hates all those who worshipped false gods, and you go to hell while the atheist is let off. If the atheists are right, you have wasted all the time and energy you spent on church and associated activities. This also applies if any of a hundred other religions are right, and their god(s)don't recognise your worship as valid. Rongo-rongo will not accept praise offered to Jesus.
-
I think the bible or any other religion may not all be right, I mean the bible has been written a very very very long time ago, its bound to have mistakes just take whatever makes sense in your heart and forget the rest.
-
No actually, you are taking a much greater chance. You live a very limited life style in hopes that your religion is correct and in hope that you will be spared punishment and be rewarded in the after life. Your belief in God is no different than the belief in Gods and entities of the past. You people are superstitious and you live in a world of fantasy, not even one that seems appealing. Us atheists are living life to the fullest, some more than others, we respect people and do whatever our heart desires, while you people are too concerned whether or not something checks up in the bible as appropriate. We use common sense and think logically instead of fearing the punishment of an unreal god. We don't need a book or pastors to tell us how we have to live, our common sense does us a good enough job. We know that once we die, we are dead, we go back into the ground to replenish the Earth and the cycle of life continues, but you believe that life doesn't start until after your death. It is obvious to all who have common sense that you are taking the greatest risk, while we don't like to risk wasting our life.

i asked this when i first got on ab. http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1399413 people will feel the need to keep reminding you that it's pascal's wager and that it's not about chance...which i completely agree with - it is, of course about faith rather than taking a chance. but it is sad that people could reject God when it's a matter of eternity...but i can't blame them; it depends on the work of the Holy Spirit!

No one has to prove their beliefs unless they are trying to convert someone else. If an Atheist were trying to convert you, I would expect them to have real evidence to try to persuade you. Since it is most likely the opposite, then the burden of proof is on you. Since I am not trying to convert anyone to my religious beliefs, I don't bother proving anything to anyone.
-
Proof and faith are not really related. You believe because it 'fits' for you. Atheists don't believe because it doesn't 'fit'.
-
Nobody has to "prove" their beliefs. It is my opinion that religion or faith is simply each person's attempt at understanding themselves and the world they live in. Organized religion is nothing more than a fantasy, created by man to give him some sense of purpose.
-
What about the senseless waste of human life and freedom inflicted by the various religions? Don't you consider that a loss?
-
But dont make the mistake of assuming that just because you belive in God you will go to heaven. Your cynicism and condemnation towards others are not very righteous traits.
-
The only part of your question I do not agree with is where you say atheists are going to hell...they are unsaved that is very true, but ONLY God can condemn someone to hell so why do so many Christians go about condemning people to hell when they do not have that authority to do so? I am a spirit filled Christian and I live by Matt.22:37-40. If Christiams cannot live by these two commandments then I very much question your validity as being a true Christian.

This is Pascal's Wager. And Pascal's Wager is wrong. The problem is, there are tens of thousands of religions. Do you realize how many religions are putting you in some kind of hell for not believing in them? We are all essentially taking the same chance that the Hindus aren't right, or the Muslims, or the Mormons, or the Pagans, or the Rastafarian's, or the Jehovah's Witnesses, or the 7th day Adventists.... Aren't you taking a chance by not being a part of these religions? It's impossible to join every religion. What gives Christianity any weight over the others? Plus, would your Christian God want you to follow Him only because you want to hedge your bets? Isn't that kind of selfish?
-
Just before I die, I will confess all my sins to a priests. The bible says, God will forgive me. He gave His word. In the meantime, I can have a jolly good time breaking the Ten Commandments. See you in heaven, Sucker.

So basically you think it's okay for a person to believe in something out of fear instead of common sense? And you think God is going to reward you for only believing because you expect that reward? Wow. That's pretty dumb.
-
Ah, but, you forget about all the other religions. What if they are right and YOU are wrong? Well, I doubt your reception at whatever sort of heaven they have will be that warm if that is the case. More importantly, atheism doesn't hold the burden of proof, religion does, since religion made the original claim. Now, just because you can't prove it doesn't mean that you're automatically wrong, or that atheists are right. For atheists to be right they have to show that it's impossible, just like for you to be right, you have to show that it's certain. No matter what you do, you're taking a chance. And no chance is greater that any other, at least, no in a way you can prove.

Nothing like building belief on fear...
-
What if the Koran turns out to be true? What if the Latter-day Saints Bible turns out to be true? Or perhaps you have to be more precise than that!!! What if you have to be Catholic, or maybe Protestant, or Baptist, or Jehovah? Toss your coin and take your pick...mean time I’ll go with intelligentsia and reasoning. All the evidence suggests the various religions are a sham and that’s good enough for me.
-
You've got lots to lose. You've just wasted an entire lifetime devoting yourself to fairy tales. The Bible IS Bullshit. It's that simple. http://godisimaginary.com/
