I haven't had a lot of pets, but they always let me know what their names are.
-
Here, here to Momma_Bear. Every time I try to 'name' an animal, it never sticks.
-
My cat was named based on a physical attribute. My dog let me know her name (when I saw her, I just sort of knew what her name was). My other cat was named because when he was in foster care, he had one name but it was unacceptable to us, so we came up with a list of names that sounded similar (so it would be easier on him).
-
our dog Teddy told us
-
Most of my cats were named by someone else. The only ones I named myself were a black stray that wandered in last winter (okay, I let her in, but it was cold and she was sitting in the snow). She had so much static electricity, I called her Sparky, and Swiffer, since he has long fur, and he always has stuff clinging to it. Muffy, Tiger, Carson and Fuzzums were all named by kids.
-
First I look for any outstanding trait in the animals personality, then I do the same for their appearance. If neither of these inspire a name suggestion then I start thinking of names I like, since I probably won't have children anyways- I can afford to waste them on animals.
-
my friend has a name that sounded like a dog so i made fun of him by naming my dog it... Riley
-
The name just came to me when I looked at her (she's a cat)- "Rin". It's a strange name but it fits her perfectly.
-
Brewster just looked like a 'Brewster' when I first saw him. Mouser, my cat, looked like a mouse when she was a kitten, and Harry my other cat, my neighbor's daughter named her because she was fond of Harry Potter.
-
my dog came with his name (hes a rescue dog) but it totally suits him as he does look like a bear. hes big round and black with coarse hair.
-
I brought her home and watched her sniff around the house and said isn't she cute she looks just like a baby. and that is how she got her name.
-
thought of a name and started calling him it

One was obtained on Friday the 13th - Jason One has a prominent scrotum although castrated-Beanie (it looks like a bean bag) One had the name Missy and I changed it to Mystie One came with the name Abigail but she showed us her belly all the time so we named her Nellie because it rhymes with belly. Nellie Belly.. sometimes Nel-Z Bel-Z
-
Mr.SILKY
-
One of my cats had a mark like a bikini top on her back, and she did this little dance when I scritched her just right. So I decided that, if she's going to dance in a bikini, her name should be Gypsy Rose Lee (or Gypsy for short).
-
my sister had a dream that i named her that, so i did her name is SALLY! lol her full name is--- Sally Joe Litchfield~ :)
-
My dog's hair is a very rich red..the color of Ginger. ;-) I had a black and white cat who's fur around his nose was white.. under his nose, right where it should be was a patch of black fur that looked just like a mustache. His name was Groucho.

-
Mickey and Barley, my Avatars....I just picked their names out of my head. I first thought of Mikey and Barney. I changed to Mickey, I thought it sounded better. Regarding Barney, my wife said that there is nothing purple in him, so I picked Barley.
-
I like the singer Shakira, and my son couldn't say that and I thought that was a little weird so we named her Kira.
-
I don't even know the answer to that question, my mother named it...

I took a name that was already with me, my last name "Johnson". Then called him Tank. Tank Johnson, from the chicago bears (defencive tackle). Chicago being my fav team. i think thats cool anyway.
-
My sis and i search on the internet for old ancient names, when we find one we like and pronouce, we look at the animal and see if it fits its personallity. Then we see if the animal responds-hit or miss. Ya. were crazy animal lovers.
-
He was a Russian Blue, so we named him "Blue" What a beautiful beast he was. Proud, protective and loving. We had him for eleven great years. He was there for our wedding and the birth of both my daughters (not in the room, you silly monkey.) Loved that cat like a little brother.
-
We called our cat sexy lexy, because she looked so beautiful when she was born, with her multi colored hair, soft as a rabbits! We named our male cat Pumba, for being the playful leader. We named our dog little bear, because at the time that is what she looked like, we should change it to big bear now lol!
-
One of my cats was named after a drink, Fanta
-
My mom's husband has a purebred American Bulldog that he named MaMa, so we felt it appropriate that we name her baby Baby Girl. It's all simple, really.
-
pepper because i always wanted a lil black puppy named pepper, precious because she has such a sweet & precious dispostion about her, & chewy, when he was 1 day old my son was holding him & he was laying on his chest & climbed up to his eye & started sucking on his eye lid & even left a lil hicky & my hubby said he already a chewy lil fella so we named him chewy, however later thru his toddler-puppy years he earned his name well by chewing on everything he could get his paws on. And my siamese cat has a lil bow tie looking white marking under his nose so I named him boe bow
-
The day after I moved to the stated from Sydney I got a Golden Retriever puppy! I named her Sydney!
-
We sat in the front window waiting for a signwritten van to go past. The first word we saw on the signwritten van was MURPHY hence our German Shepherd is called MURFI Our jack russell was originally going to be called HARLEY (motorcycle) but on consideration and the way he looked we called him HARVEY Our other Jack Russell was named after a plaster cast that my partner had on her arm (she broke it) when we got the dog hence CASS

Colors, patterns, and Personality. My cat is foggy grey and her name is Misty. But she has a weird little mustache, it looks alot like Hitler. Go to catsthatlooklikehitler.com Some of the cats on that website look like mine, but she is not up there. She is also kind of out there- her personality is kind of- you know- kind of unclear- like a misty sky.
-
Pepper- he's lil & black Precious- because she's sweet & umble natured Chewy-because as a pup he chewed on everything Zippy-because shes fast & quicker then a cat & never holds still, she's a zippy lil pup.

I was Christmas shopping at a mall one day and stopped in the pet store as I always do on the rare ocassion I venture to go shopping. Saw the same type of dog that I had had growing up as a kid. She just caught my eye and I decided to buy her. She was so cute and looked so despondent being in a cage. I know that it is not recommended to buy a pet from a store(as opposed to a breeder) but I did it anyway. Best purchase I ever made, without question. 11 years of friendship and companionship so far. Anyway, her name is Macy, which happened to be the store across from the pet store. She was already named and responded to it. At least the pet store didn't name her after the store next to Macy's....Radio Shack:)
-
we picked Tucson for our turtle because that is where my little brother and sister stole her from *shame* its the truth and thats all i say on AB is the truth i have nothing to hide
-
Well, I didnt name my dog Mickey, that was his name when we adopted him. I didnt wanna change it cause that was the name he was used to and didnt wanna confuse him. I can't stand that name, so I call him Mickey Roonie Rourke. I know that's a long name, so sometimes I call him Bug-A-Boo, cause he can be really clingy and bug me at times!
-
Caesar- because he acts like a cat emperor around the house and to all other living creatures, including his humans, his "Dulls". Goldie is a black cat who has beautiful golden eyes. Blackie was too obvious:-) Rayne, our newfoundland- We have a thing going with our Newfie names. They are always weather and water related. Thought it was time for some rain but didn't want to spell it that way. Visiting chipmunk- My husband named him Adrian after Adrian Monk on TV. And then there are some woodpeckers that come here that we've named Bob and NotBob but that's another story:-)
-
i dont know. I guess just go online and look up names. I know that if i had a dog and it was a girl i'd name her Lilly because I had a dog named Daisy and that would be cute. If it was a boy I'd name him Prancer because I like Poodles and poodles are prancers.
-
Usually by how they look ( their color, disposition) or just pick a name you like.

Here goes: 1. Lloyd -- came with his name from the Humane Society 2. Lucy La-La -- was named La-La when I got her. I couldn't stand to call a cat La-La. She was always in trouble and Ricky Ricardo used to yell "Lucy" at the top of his lungs when she was in trouble, so Lucy fit. And I put La-La as her middle name 3. Smidgen -- He was just so little and cute when I got him, it sort of fit him. 4. Princess Smurf -- a tiny blue/black kitten. I thought it was a boy, and he looked like a Smurf. Added Princess when I found out he was a she 5. Tipper -- black & white with white on the tip of his tail. 6. Mojo -- a friend was supposed to take him and wanted a black kitten named Mojo 7. Cocoa -- Black & White -- looked like hot cocoa with marshmallows 8. Sunny -- came with his name from the previous owners 9. Bonehead -- Dumb as a box of rocks! But cute! 10. Wally -- AB suggestion -- found him at Wal-Greens. 11. Sir Gidget -- Thought he was a little girl, too. Thought Gidget was a cute name. Took her to the vet, and the vet said, "It's a boy" and called him Sir Gidget!

Well... Annie (beagle/basset) was already named when we got her and we tried to change her name but she wasn't having it, so it stuck. Pokey Joe (Annie's son beagle/basset/terrier) was originally just Pokey because he took 2-3 hours to be born and I randomly added the Joe part and it stuck. Bastian (kitty) was named to "match" his sister (my sister's cat) who was Ariel but hubby didn't like the whole Little Mermaid theme so I shortened it from Sebastian to Bastian (unless he's in trouble)and said he could say it was from the Never Ending Story. Binx (bunny)was named after the cat on the movie Hocus Pocus just because we liked the name.
-
1) My Horse "Rosie"...her registered name is "Bey Derby Rose" and she had already had the barn name "rosie' when I bought her...it seemed to fit her personality perfectly so we kept it 2)Ferdinand the cat...we liked historical names and we thought "Ferdy" was cute so we picked it 3) Dante the dog...keeping in line with historical names, we picked it after the Italian Poet 4) Buddha the cat...another historical name, when we got him he was so chubby and so much a lover and a pacifict that it seems so perfect :)

He is a stray I took in last June. He was in very bad shape and quite old (learned he is over 15 years old). So, I named him Ragged Old Man, Rags for short. Here is why he earned that name (he looks better, believe it or not, than when I found him a few weeks before) followed by a "not so ragged" shot (what he looks like now):
-
Taz got her name due to household democracy. We discussed names and narrowed them down to 4 possible names for her. 2 name were drawn out of the four, then we voted on the final 2 names. We all then voted for the best name. It was 2-1 in favour of Taz. I had the casting vote. Didn't like the name Milo, so voted Taz. :) See democracy does work. Well at least sometimes it does in ones own home LoL

1. Seymour (Sup Sup - Outdoor male (well, IT) cat - used to be indoor) - After recently having seen Little Shop of Horrors musical, the cat was part of a litter, and always was meowing to get to a treat. We joked he was saying "FEED ME", and I intoned (from the show) "Feed me, Seymour... FEED ME!" The name stuck. The nickname (Sup Sup) was something my ex came up with LONG before the Wassup dudes for Budweiser. Think it had to do with it always wanting Supper. (Wanta Sup Sup? something like that.) [EDIT: Seymour died earlier this year.] 2. Dusty (femaile (IT) - indoor gray longhair, nice markings) - Her color is the color of dust... Thus... [EDIT: Dusty died late last year] (New wife, new dog and dogs... you'll see) 3. Shelby (female black lab) - Got her from Lafayette Indiana pound. Was told she was fixed. New GF (now wife) liked the name Shelby. 4. Kirby (female black lab - one of Shelby's first and ONLY litter) - She was a fuzzy (long hair) black ball with sad eyes. We said she looked like a Furby (relatively new and popular at the time.) I came up with Kirby the Furby. (We've since dropped "the Furby" most of the time! LOL) 5. KC (pron Casey - female black lab - another of Shelby's 5-pup litter) - BIG girl... Bright blue eyes (still hsa em, too! - think Debi Mazar (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2230818816/nm0000529 - that's who I think of!) Wife's ex-name initials turned around. C. K. to K. C.) AND it made a name. 6. Jake (male rat-terrier/spitz mix) Current wife's old (12yo!) dog where she lived before had a litter of 4 pups. She went down, picked one out and brought him home. She gave him the name. Not sure WHERE she got it, but it pretty much fits the dog! LOL [EDIT] My wife brought a cat home from work. It had been wandering around there when she was working nights, and people would pet and feed it, but it obviously had no home. It's a "talker", meaning it meows a lot, and in, I swear, SENTENCES... "Meeooowooowowooo mroowwowoow meowwwoowwwwrrrrwwoooowww." Thus the name "Maow". (Thought seriously about "Mao" as in "Mao Tsi Tung (Mousy Tongue... Get it?) but my wife preferred "Maow". LOL Those are the current names. BONUS: MY ex and I had a dog (female small norweigan elkhound) named BJ. We'd recently watched the MASH show where Hawkeye spends the show trying to figure out BJ Hunnicutt's REAL name. AND our initials - mine "B" and hers "J" - fit. So it was OUR dog. (nickname "Boojy" came from our young children not being able to say BJ correctly at the beginning. I have other names for other pets I've had through the years. Some have explanations and some the explanations are forgotton. Fun to remember them, though. [EDIT] Pictures available here - http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/2445803

My pitbull mix "Kenzie"'s name was sort of a "meeting in the middle" type thing with my ex. She wanted to name her something like Marshmellow or Angel, while I wanted to name her something ghetto and hardcore. We just kind of started throwing out mixtures of the two, & Kenzie's what we ended up with. I just recently got a black cat who, of course, is Obama. I also have a dog that was named "Foxy" by a friend of mine, whose name I plan on changing, & I'm still looking for a good name for my white kitten. I've been calling him Angel because he's soft as a cloud, has crystal-blue eyes, and is adorably irresistable in that fresh-kitten way... but the name is too girly.
-
My male Ragdoll cat is named Temujin, which was the birth name of Genghis Khan. He got this name because from the time I got him, when he was a 5-week old kitten, he seemed bent on world domination. Anything from shoelaces, to leaves, to the pattern on a quilt were fair game for attack.
-
He was named after his disposition/attitude ... Stormy.
-
The oldest cat, Mandy, was from an animal shelter and had a name. The next cat, Diablo, is all white with a raccoon-like tail. Especially fitting when we realized her disposition, she's a handful to say the least. And then the icing on the cake: Her eyes glow red! I'm not kidding, you know how cat's eyes reflect light back, hers reflect red. Diablo had a kitten, Tequila. My daughter named that one. She was home alone when that kitten came out (the others were born while we were there. Then came my duck. I knew I wanted to name her Conan from the minute I realized that I had always wanted a duck. She's just now getting full grown so I'm shopping for a spiked collar. Girly's duck is Winter. Cause it's white.
-
Captain Turtle ... I cannot rightly say that I remember.
-
"Foots", my cat, has white feet but she's a black cat otherwise.
-
I had two cats: Spider and Bub. Spider was always covered in cob webs. And Bub was just like a little baby.
-
I didn't, he was already named because he was adopted, and the previous owners gave him the name Jack, lazily (his breed being a Jack Russel), but I prefer to call him albino turd because he's white, and that's rare for a Jack Russel apparently.
-
my dog had 4 names before I settled on one. I said something to him and he gave me look and stuck his ears up. My first thought was that he looks like Scrappy do0 when he did that..so that's his name just without the DOO
-
my dog is a black chow so i named him blackie.
-
I called my dog Lincoln in honour of the famous US President.
-
Lola was named for the Kinks song, April was named by my son, & my wife named Ajax.
-
It'll sound stupid, but they gave it to me. I observed their behaviors, and the words fit.
-
I just started calling him Bear Bear..because he is as big as a bear:)
-
It fit. I answered one kinda like this before. I have a part wolf named Crapper. He was severely beat as a pup & we rescued him. If you raised your voice just a little he'd be so scared he'd well.... thus the name. He outgrew it in 6 weeks or so with love but the name stuck!
-
My sister named our cat Stacey since that was the name of her favorite character from Babysitters Club when she was a kid!
-
I called my cat Mary - Cause it was Christmas Time, and every one was saying "Merry" Christmas. I was 7
-
i look at the pets personality and how the pet looks, then try to match up a name that fits the cute little thing.
-
1:blacky,I named her cause she was a black dog (she died) 2:pickles,I saw some pickles in the fridge and i randomly named him pickles cause he has green eyes (he's a black cat) 3:rocky,rocky is blacky's son and I named him rocky after the flying squirrel off of rocky and bulwinkle (lol I loved that show) so yeah that's how I chose the names and reasons ^^ I hope you like the names I gave my pets cause I love them, and gave them unquie names

Our cats got Star Wars names, so my wife and I just kept throwing names out until one sounded right. So we currently have Talon and Beru. Winter and Biggs have new homes. The only feline exception to this was Pippin, who was insane, and is now in some weird cat-only no-human-contact place. He was scared to death of people. Our dog, we thought at the time was an Aussie Shepherd, so we named him Crush (the turtle in Finding Nemo) because it was somewhat Australian. Of course, we later found out he's something else.
