I would choose between a Fender Stratocaster, a Les Paul guitar or any Ibanez guitar. Fender Stratocasters aren't too much money, I mean, you can get them from between $200-$700 on www.music123.com. They're easy to play, and they're one of the most well-known guitars. Myself, I started with an Ibanez AX 120 guitar (Mike DeWolf from taproot plays that guitar), it has a great sound(check taproot out if you wanna hear what the guitar sounds like), its not too cheap also(I think I got it for about $340, it plays amazingly, I got it 3 years ago.) Les Paul guitars are well known too, they're not too expensive if you get a simple one.

My first electric guitar was a Mexican made Fender Stratocaster and I still love it. Some that I would recommend you stay away from are those pieces of crap you find in wal-mart, Target or any other similar store. They're garbage and they'll be very frustrating to learn on. Spend a little bit more and get something decent. Make sure you check it out too, don't just find one with a cool color and go with that. Make sure it has a decent sound. Check the frets out and make sure there's no buzzing on it, and the neck should be straight. That's a start.
