Flat rate based on the number of outlets (print and on-line) that pick it up. The real money is not in the strips, but in book sales and merchandising. These days, going with one of the major comic syndicates is a losing proposition. The internet has allowed a lot of damn good talent to hone their skills with a massive audience. Some are challenging the monopoly of the syndicates by offering their work for free to newspapers as the artist makes his money on-line. Scott Kurtz and his "PvP" is the best known example. DJ Koffman's gotten noticed by the comic book industry and was pulled from "Yurmumah!" to do "Hero By Night".
