There are different colored dots that represent the speed of the ball. if i am not mistaken, there are red dots, blue dots, yellow dots and double yellow dots. in cold climates, it is always nice to use a red or blue dotted ball becos there is less strength needed in warming up the ball. in equatorial climates, we use the double yellow dot. with advances in racquet technology, the ball is now hit much harder (and faster) than ever before and thus the need to slow the game down by using a slower ball. there really is no fun in the game where one hits the ball so hard and fast that the other person cannot even visualise the flight of the ball. we call that "see no ball!" mind you, the double yellow dot balls do travel pretty fast if it is played by two good players and the ball is hot enough. hope this answers your question a little better.
