Welllllll.....IT hurts. But not too bad. The initial piercing is rather unpleasant but that subsides quickly. Your tongue is held with forceps and a hollow needle is pushed through the flesh of your tongue (or whatever else is pierced for that matter). Because the tongue swells, you have to have a barbell piercing long enough to accomodate the swelling. For about a week or ten days you must be very careful to keep the piercing clean. That means very thorough oral hygiene several times a day and after you eat ANYTHING. Eventually the swelling subsides, the tissue heals, and you replace the longer barbell with more permanent jewlery. At that point there is no pain. It is not uncommon though for some people to "play" with the jewlery, tapping it against their teeth etc. which can be a problem. Some piercers don't place the piercing as well as others and it causes the piercee to talk funny for a while. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the worse pain you've ever felt....probably a 3-4 overall.

Nah, I have mine pierced. It didn't hurt all that bad, my nose piercing hurt hella worse! The clamp is the thing that hurts the most really, & it's not too bad, just like a pinch.

A friend of mine got hers pierced and she said it hurt. Think about it though, it hurts when you accidentally cut your tongue or bite down hard on your tongue.. So its gotta hurt when you poke a hole through your tongue!

Edit: I've heard nipple piercings are the worst though.

First, they put the clamp on your tongue and tighten it really tight. That's the ONLY part that hurts, the clamp. Then, they stab the needle in, which you can't feel AT ALL. Then they twist the ball and it's all over. At first, it won't hurt until maybe a few hours later, then the swelling and such starts.

It doesn't really hurt, just a LOT of pressure, and it feels hot when the needle goes through. The next few days are really bad though!

I really want to get my tongue pierced but i am terrified of needles!! I'm worried that if i have it done i'm going to faint! I've got my belly button pierced which didn't hurt that much but i've heard that you can swallow your tongue in your sleep and suffocate! Is this true? And what hurts more having your belly button pierced or having your tongue pierced? Thanks xxx

it feels like alot of pressure
depending on which way they go
if its top to bottom it hurts
because of ur taste buds taste the metal and it just freaks ur head out cause metal is in ur mouth and then pain
but if u go from bottom to top its just alot of pressure u dont feel it as bad as u would think
u can always use mouth wash before to numb it
but i say its better to go bottom to top and no mouth wash cause then ur in for a lot of pain after the mouthwash wears off

i just got my tongue pierced...i have an extremely low pain tolerance and i would give it a 2. the initial piercing did not hurt AT ALL... you could just feel pressure honestly! the only thing that was somewhat uncomfortable for me was my tongue swelling... it swelled pretty bad i woke up every morning with teeth marks on the side.. i could still talk but there were random words that were soo hard to say. DONT SUCK ANYTHING THROUGH A STRAW, it causes something bad i wasnt really payng attention to my piercer but i know its definitely a bad thing, just drink it normally or use a spoon!!!

the worst part is the clamp. it hurts but its worth it in the end. use sea salt rise. 1/4 teaspoon per 8 oz of warm water. if you are going to use the mouth was use 1 part yellow nasty tasting mouth wash to 3 parts water. i say use the cap of the mouth wash to do the parts.
    dont chew on it!

I got mine done in october. I have a VERY LOW pain tolerance and it didnt hurt at all. The clamp is the only thing that was uncomfortable. Now after i got it pierced it hurt for about four days then i was almost back to normal. I had to take it out recently for surgery and i am about to go leave to have it redone! :)

it hurts but no were as bad as some pericings. The needle is hallow and if you are in a proper shop it will me a new needle each and everytime that they do a pericing. there will be no sliver of the needle that will be left behind.
the worst part of it is the clamp. the clamp hurts because it puts pressure on your tongue that you are not use to. i would recommend keeping your eyes closed, so you don't see the needle going through and hold your breath that's what i did. I'm about a month out from getting mine done, and I'm able to play with it and everything but the healing is completely different for each person. i had almost no swelling. tenderness yes a lot of tenderness. eat ice for the 1st 24 hrs. i would do it again.

i just got my done about an hour ago... this is what happends.... they make u wash ur mouth out... the dry ur tounge off then put a dot where they will pierce it.... they clamp ur tounge to hold it out ( that didnt hurt me at all) then he said ok take a breath in.... and now out... it was done... i barley felt it... if you have ever bitten you tongue... that hurts worse than getting your tongue pierced.... so go for it.. it takes two seconds... the only part that i didnt like was when he tighted the balls after the piercing... it wasnt painful it just felt weird... it took 2 mins... not even... i was in and out... im not swollen or anything...i love it:) so go for i!!

i got my tongue pierced two days ago... was really nervous cuz of all the horror stories i had heard. i must say that it didnt hurt at all, you can feel the needle pushing through which feels a little weird but no pain.. at the moment eating is quite difficult and it gets a little sore if i talk for a while but i can talk perfectly no lisps or anything and not too much swellin cuz i keep drinking cold water.. if you want to get it done then go for it, as long as you go to the right piercer that is recommended then there should be no pain at all..but i guess everyones different.

the worst part is the clamp. The pressure from the clamp you are more then happy to get it off after the needle is through that you dont notice the pain. my guy does a count down and tells me to release my breath but for all piercings i hold mine. the pain you feel is nothing like biting your tongue it more of a slow throb like when you stub a finger or thumb and it lasts a while. take 2 aspirins and a sea salt rinse the pain is not to bad just be careful when your eating and what your eating. do not eat anything spicy for at least a month and salty food a month also or you will sound like a dieing cat. and when eating take your time. it hurts like nothing you have ever felt when you bite on the ball.

yea it hurts.i was so scared wen i was getting it done in fact i was shaking && nervous lol.they take the clamp and hold your tongue between it and shovve the needle through the bottom of your tongue ((i cried )) and screw the ball on it.then i had to rinse it and cudnt talk rite and wen i did talk i drooled a lot.haha but i love my piercing now.it also depends on your pain tolerance.which mine was not high, but depends on the person.!! hope it helped :D

basically very good info offered above.
When i got mine done there was only the pain of like a pinch....like maybe when u accidentally bite ur tongue a little and it was when the needle came through the bottom of my tongue and broke through that skin. I would rate the pain i felt as a 1..possibly 2 (and im a wimp...lol).

The swelling was not too extreme in my case, but learning to talk...eat...drink with a foreign object impaled in ur tongue is a whole other world. And took a few weeks to master.
I thought there was quite a bit of pain the day after i got the piercing and lasted up till about a week later. Because unlike a "normal" wound...u try to keep an ordinary injury from getting bumped or moving around...but with a tongue it is in constant motion...moving around in ur mouth..eating..talking...so while the piercing process was relatively not painful...the healing process caused quite a bit of pain.
But i think everyone is different because of different factors.

also it seems to take longer to heal if you are one of those nervous..fidgetty ppl (like i am)..always bouncing ur leg...drumming ur fingers, etc...because it is impossible to NOT twiddle with it...moving it around in ur mouth..clacking it..as mentioned above, etc. Even after the 2 weeks or so of healing...for months later if i had a particularly stressful day my tongue would be aching the next day because i must of messed with the piercing exsessively the day prior.

Exactly what the other user said. I have no pain tolerance whatsoever so after I got my tongue pierced, it hurt for almost 2 weeks. It's hard not to talk funny for the first few days only because you're not use to having something stuck to your tongue. My friends all had theirs done and a few of them talked funny and most of them said it didn't hurt for more than a few days and it wasn't "painful" after that, just uncomfortable. But for a week straight I had to rinse with Listerine after ANYTHING I ate or drank. Even after a glass of water. So I rinsed after eating/drinking or every half hour, whichever was first. I took mine out a couple years later because everyone has one. I didn't want to be a "copycat". But it's entirely a personal decision. I still think their neat and I miss mine, it just wasn't for me anymore.

I got my tongue pierced 2 weeks ago. I thought the clamp hurt the worst out of the whole deal. The initial piercing isn't going to hurt much. There aren't many nerves in the tongue. Since the tongue is a muscle the needle isn't piercing anything but the top and bottom of the tongue. The needle is just being pushed through the muscle like pushing a needle through fabric. Mine didn't hurt nor did it swell the first day. It was very hard to eat though. The second day it swelled up still not very painful. The third day it was still swollen and more painful, I compare the pain to biting your tongue. It hurts the worst waking up in the morning because the piercing is dried out inside. After a few days getting used to and finally being able to eat and talk normally you will find your muscles in your mouth and jaw to kind of be tight and painful. Only because your pretty much learning how to talk again and using different muscles. After the 5th day everyday the piercing got better and better. There was a huge improvement everyday!

It really depends on you...they tell you to relax because if your tongue tightens up (like mine did) then they have to force it through and then it hurts worse and theres usually bleeding...but if you relax it wont hurt at all...I took an ibuprofen about a half an hour before i got my tongue pierced and it really helped the swelling. The next day i was eating pizza and cheeseburgers...Ive had mine for over four years now and i have gauged it out to a 6ga now that experience hurt like HELL!!! gauging is more painful then just about anything...

I have had my tongue pierced for almost 5 yrs now, for me I was clamped no drooling (lol) and needle went through..didn't really notice (no bleeding) and barbell went in and swelling started. it was puffy the first day but didn't really hurt. But the next morning and the days to follow.. it was sore. Your tongue is a massive muscle.. so think of your arm and a needle. its tender even after a small needle. So for me it was just the movement, talking, drinking, eating etc. If I can remember correctly my swelling was down by the 5th day.

And Honestly, I am a hard working professional with my own freelance business. (I am a Makeup Artist, no I'm not punk or emo.. I would look like one of the girls at your Clinque, Lancome, Estee Lauder Counters.. Very Pretty and Not over done at all)
I have had clients that have known me for a yr and a half and finally noticed it.. (I don't put clear arcylic in its all stainless) And Asked when I got it done. I laugh and say "A lonnnggg time ago." and they in shock say "Wow, I never noticed it and with your speech would have never known, other than the silver ball". I will never ever get rid of it. Even if someone payed me.

*And to all the haters that question why people choose to get it done... REALLY.. ITS NONE OF YOUR EFF"IN BUSINESS!!
I did NOT get mine done for "SEXUAL" reasons. I had no problems without it.. lol
I did it cause I had wanted it since I was 16, along with my flower tatt that I still don't have and my bellybutton, which I got at 16. At 17 I got a 4inch tatt to see if I'd be able to handle my large one.. And I wasn't even allowed to get my first holes in my ears till I was 13 (a TEEN)
so by 15 I had 3 in each side.
I also want both my nips and my nose, 3 more in one ear and 2 in the other and the flower tatt and one other tatt.
Now I have highlighted blond with passion pink peek-a-boo type highlights and have had soooo many complements. And my MOM who is very conservative(don't live with a guy -unless ur married type) Loves what I have done everything can be hidden within reason. And Loves my new hair
This is who I am, if you don't like it.. you don't have to look...
you don't have to read about piercings if you don't agree with em.
We make the choice to express ourselves. You make the choice to preach your beliefs.
And do you have your ears pierced? WHY? Is it because your were peer pressured into it..everyone else was getting it done? Probably not, probably cause YOU wanted it.

Here's a perfect analogy... we are the non-religious believers and theres you the believer trying to get us to see ''your view'' .. it's your view.. not ours. so next time you see a post on something you don't believe in, ie: piercings, tattoos... Imagine its not there. :D and save us all

My step mom pierced my tongue three days ago. Im a big baby so of course I cried when she pierced it but it hurts alot worse after it's pierced. Your tongue gets swollen and mine still tingled and I can still taste the ring. I tried to eat the day I got it pierced don't do that it will only make it worse I also took mine out that day and had to re pierce it. I use mouth wash alot and brush my teeth to keep it from getting infected. Ibruprofen and Tylenol helps wit the pain and swelling. Chew on ice or get a frosty from wendys that's what I been doing. But all in all getting it pierced don't hurt but for the next three days it will. But it's worth it. And if you don't like it you can always just take it out. And you will have a lisp. My boyfriend makes fun of me because mines pretty bad.

Wow!!!! I just got my tongue pierced afta wanting it for sooooo long! and i was nervous like hell.....but take it from someone who has a VERY low threshold for pain...it felt like if u got bite by an ant! it felt really weird with the numbing solution in my mouth but otherwise it was a quick and pretty much pain free experience! if u really want to do it....then go for it!
and it's easy enough to hide depending on how far back u pierce it! My tongue didn't even swell and i'm not talkin funny either!
