I don't know what it could be but I would ask your GP for a referral to see a specialist who deals in chest problems. Find out once and for all and then it can be treated and you will stop worrying.

You have a whole lot of things going on in your upper digestive tract and your resperatory system. I would bet you have some severe allergy that is causing the congestion. Do you smoke? I'm sorry, but that has got to go. If not, you are eating something that is messing with your system. Go see an allergy specialist.

My guess is it's GERD. Very common. Stress causes it. That stands for gastrointestinal reflux disease. There are over the counter remedies. Ask your pharmacist. Try raising the head of your bed 5-10 inches, so your head is higher than your feet while you sleep. It can be caused by allergies, too - to foods. Sometimes people can't eat wheat. Try cutting out coffee, soft drinks, smoking, alcohol if you're doing any of those. If you've been to the ER and still don't know, chances are it's GERD.
