It is a smart move that will retain him power and influence within the Senate. I'm sure he thinks it will help him keep his seat too. Job security is important. edit - Since I knew very little about this, did a little research. Apparently he had supported the Stimulus package and according to Rasmussen wasn't going to get the republican nomination anyway next election. He trailed his opponent by 21 points last week. By making the switch, he can be assured of the democratic nomination. As I said, good career move for him.
