The Christian day would still stay official because the majority of Americans are Christians. Even though there should be separation of church and state, Christianity has a huge influence in American politics, and there is no chance that another religion will get higher priviledges than Christianity. The only thing that's possible, is, as it is seen in some states currently, that non-religious people attack the priviledges of Christianity. For example government constitutions that still include phrases like 'under God...' or tax priviledges of churches.

? Well let's look at some other similar situations. Christian churches (and most other religions) teach that killing children in the womb is wrong, yet it still happens in every state and over 1,500,000 times a year in the United States. Christian churches (and almost all other major religions) teach that marriage is between a man and a woman, yet many states, even states where it has been put to a vote and lost, are changing their laws to make gay marriage legal. I don't think that Christianity is getting any preference over other religions today. Therefore, I think people would decide what they want to do, and they would do it.

The idea of the Sabbath being the day of rest is simple. We need to work here on earth. It is healthy and natural to be productive and helpful. We also need balance for our spiritual lives. American states don't observe any special day. Christians who exist all over the planet usually recognize Sunday as the day of rest. It has nothing to do with Americans though our right wing brothers and sisters who think they own America will have you believe otherwise. I observe Thursdays as a high holy day myself. But I always honor the Sabbath as a holy day as well as each day of my existance.
