Thunder is a sound made by lightning, where the sudden increase in pressure and heat from the lightning causes a rapid expansion of air that resulted in a loud sound --- that is thunder.

When lighting occurs it leaves a "hole" in the air when the lightening bolt stops. The air rushing back in to fill the void causing the boom. Some what similar to clapping your hands.

lightning splits the air apart as it's traveling thru the sky. as soon as the lighting disappears the air quickly slaps back together causing a sound known as Thunder.
