  • Basically at the time the first world war broke out the whole of Europe was in a state of high tension, past wars (such as the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71), huge build up of armed forces and shady military plans, and a tricky network of alliances having created a horrible atmosphere of suspicion. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was just the straw that broke the camels back. It was enough excuse for Austro-Hungary to lose it and start attacking Serbia - with the backing of Germany. Russia then decided to wade in to help the Serbs, Germany got angry and attacked Belgium, and then Britain and France joined in.
