Could you perhaps not try laminate flooring - it may well be expensive but stain removal becomes a cinch and can be hard wearing. We have a long room as well, used to have a rug in it with tassles around the edges but combing the tassles just got really annoying, so we got rid of it and just made do with carpet. If it's just stains that are the problem, how about getting a company in to 'steam clean' the carpet. I don't know exactly how it works, but they professioanlly remove all stains from the carpet. You could then try perhaps putting down a protective chemical to stop future staining - perhaps the same company would do that for you as well.

You can try putting down TWO area rugs...the same size with a bit of the blue showing between the two of them. I would look for area rugs that either compliment the existing blue (assuming that color complements your other colors in the room) and look for fringe free as well! Another possible is to look for a woven rattan, or other "grass like" area rug...these typically have banded edges and can often be either custom made for a semi reasonable price or found pre-made in an assortment of different (neutral or bright color) bands. Of course, if this is a fairly "formal" looking room, this wouldn't do at all, as it is a very casual almost outdoor look.
