Turn the Gain, Treble, and Bass way up, and turn the Mids all the way down. This helps the high notes cut through the rest of the sound, while the low notes give the sound that "rough" edge.

This is exactly the setup that James Hetfield used on quite a quite a few tunes. Chorus, level=65% speed=50% depth=75% hi eq=50% Distortion, level=50% low=60% middle=25% hi=50% Depending on you pedals you may need to tweak these setting a bit. However, The pedals themselves are a Chorus and a distortion. I prefer Boss padals myself. Good luck.
