Paganism is he mother of all religions. Sacrifices, Virgin Mary, Easter Bunny, Torture by nailing, after life, worshipping a spirit, fanaticism, fasting, execution of infidels, etc.

It was and is, a clever way to adapt pagan religions to Christianity. If they had rejected outright all the old beliefs it would have been much harder to get converts.
