  • and money...don't talk about money.
  • Because these are areas on which people often disagree. To avoid them entirely leads to a very bland style of conversation though.
  • because they are topics which carry a lot of personal input and passion.
  • Because nobody wants to actually TALK about these topics. They always lead to arguments.
  • Religion and politics are two topics that we consider to be infinitely bigger than ourselves. Those are the two things that also define most of our livelyhoods. When there's an argument, people often consider it a personal attack against him/herself and their families/heritage. No wonder people get so ticked about these things.
  • Because people take a deeply, personal, interest in each. Despite their beliefs about the "factual" nature of their belief, most often, the opinion is emotion based. When the emotions are involved with opinions, reason fails most folks and arguments prevail. Therefore, there are no "open-minded" discussions, only name calling, attacks and misinformation.
  • It often isn't the "personal" nature -- after all, most of us aren't directly and immediately affected by what happens in the middle east, much less by the difference between a religion and a cult. What is distinctive about these -- as well as sexual mores or financial styles -- is that there can never be a definitive answer, and that everyone has the sense that their opinion is just as valid as anyone else's. At the bottom of this rests the tension between morality and culture: the former is considered immutable, while the latter isn't. People tend to think their opinions are based on unchanging principles, while others' might not be.
  • People can never agree on politics because it's a constent fight. With Religion, People have different beliefs then others and some don't want to compare their beliefs.
  • They are two things in life that will and have affect every human on this earth. And they will determine your future. Which will you choose? God or Man's? Who do you put your trust in God or Man? Think about it.
