  • Look on any bookshelf and you'll see how much it varies. Some books have really wide margins, some have smaller ones. Some use small, size 10 or 11 font, some use size 14 font. Also, the line spacing and typeface varies a lot. Finally, the way authors handle chapter breaks can add a lot of spacing to the book. Additionally, the physical dimensions of any book varies. I have some novels that are 3 inches wide and 6 inches tall, some that are larger than 8.5 by 11 inches.
  • Most editors prefer Courier 12 because it's easiest on the eyes. Here's a great website with all kinds of tips about submitting manuscripts. http://www.mw-land.com/mwfaq.shtml#1.1 It tells you margins and so on, and even the reasoning behing it. Good luck with your manuscript, and I hope this helps.
  • In Microsoft Word, go to the "View" menu on the toolbar, and find "Reading Layout." This will print your document out in the form of a book. It took the 20 pages I had of my story (so far), and turned it into 48 pages. That made me feel a little better about it lol.
