Call of Duty 4 is a great game. I highly recommend it. Halo 3 is a solid game.
Althoug Gears of War is a great game I don't think I would buy it now because Gears of War 2 is coming out later this year (Fall of 2008).
If your looking for a good offline game I would probly go with Assassigns Creed because it is a long game and you will get you moneys worth as well as being a game unlike any other.

Guitar hero 3 is awesome. And if you play with friends a lot, Rainbow Six: Vegas co-op mode can't be beat.

Don't know what kind or games you are into, so it's hard to suggest anything. But, Rock Band is great for parties or groups of friends. You can have guitar, bass, drums and vocals. The Guitar Hero guitar even works with Rock Band. Playing single player's not to bad either.

It mainly depends on what type of games you like. If you like first person shooters then any of the Call of Duty games would work and then you might like Halo 3. Strategy games, probably C&C or Halo Wars... haven't played it yet thought.

Call of Duty 4 is amazing, assuming you are on Xbox live. However, if you want my advice, wait 12 days and buy Grand Theft Auto 4 - 100+ hours of gameplay ignoring the multiplayer, I have a feeling it will be epic (2 reviews so far OXM and OPM, both gave it 10/10)

Well obviously there's Halo. The new one, ODST just came out and it's pretty fun. But other games are good too. My favorite game ever is Left 4 Dead. AMAZING! I also like COD 4 and World At War. Almost any first person shooter that's online.
