  • This can be partially controlled by your diet. Reduce your fat intake to a healthy minimum. Also, a major cause of oily hair is the excessive build up of sebum. Oily Hair is caused by the secretion of excessive quantities of Sebum by the Sebaceous Glands of the Scalp. These Substances Alleviate Oily Hair Hormones Progesterone supplementation (usually applied topically as Progesterone cream) sometimes alleviates Oily Hair (when the underlying cause of Oily Hair is Progesterone insufficiency or Estrogens-dominance). Minerals Sulfur often alleviates Oily Hair. These Foods or Herbs Alleviate Oily Hair Herbs Calendula (petals applied to the Hair as a rinse) alleviates Oily Hair. Oils (non-dietary Oils) Jojoba Oil (applied topically) may alleviate Oily Hair by preventing the build-up of excessive Sebum on the Scalp (by covering the scalp with Jojoba Oil it is believed that the natural production of Sebum will decline).
  • Just adding to other answers. If you want to wait a day between washings, try brushing/combing talcum powder through your hair to absorb some of the oil. You should also use a shampoo made for oily hair. Also, if you tend to get greasy at your roots like I do, try using your conditioner just on the ends (if you use one). I also found that brushing my hair with a boar bristle brush tended to help redistribute my hairs natural oils and I didn't get as much "build up" at my roots after awhile. Hope this helps.
  • Just adding to other answers. But if you overbrush your hair it will cause it to produce more oil. Also when you brush the hair it spreads this extra oil all over your hair. An easy first step would be to try brushing your hair less. It only needs a quick brush after your morning shower!
  • You really should wash your hair daily. I always wash my hair daily and it fails to get greasy; however, I notice that if I skip even a day, then my hair becomes extremely greasy! Bottom line: Wash it daily with shampoo AND conditioner. This should get rid of your greasy hair blues! Good luck!
  • You could try not useing as much products on your hair, I found for greesy hair a 2 in 1 shampoo is good without conditoner, it doesnt even damage hair. I find when i do this i have to wash my hair every 3 days.
  • baby powder,,,,makes it smell good too!
  • (i posted this on another board) the more you wash it the more greasy it will get, perhaps you should wash it twice a week, if you start washing it everyday/everyother day your hair will get used to it and become more greasy more quickly. you can get dry shampoo which makes your hair feel like its just been washed but it may give you dandruff.. which is not good ! its not good to wash your hair constantly because then you are washing out all the natural oils.! Dont apply conditioner to the roots, and avoid touching your hair when no necessary... hope that helps : )
  • I Wash My Hair Everyday.. Yet Mines Silky Soft And Shiny..(the Envy of My Friends) In School That Is.. I Straghten In the morning.. Its Fine Until A Hour Latr.. When My Head Looks Like a pineappe Frm the flicks of the hair. It gets greasy at night.. so i tend to wash my hair.. then rinse with COLD water.. And same with Conditioner. It helps get out those bad oils and helps your hair from the heat!
  • i usually can leave my hair for three days before it gets greasy but because i was going out saturday i washed it friday and so that i wouldnt have to wash it again monday i washed it saturday so by sunday it was thick of grease so i washed it again. it turns out that if your hair gets too used to your shampoo then it will stop washing it so you should change your shampoo regulary and if you want to be able to wash it every three days then you must get into some sort of regime because i did that and my clean hair is now back!!! (:
  • Don't use too many hair products. It builds up.
  • find shampoo that's safe to use everyday. brush your hair often. it spreads the oils from the roots down to the tips of your hair.
  • Use a dry shampoo but it is better to wash it every day it does not collect dirt and smoke in the grease.
  • Brush at least twice a day. If necessary use a little cornstarch once in awhile. Just sprinkle it on, and brush it out.
  • Try not to touch it too often as this transfers dirt and oils from your hands to your hair. Washing it every day will not actually have any effect on how quickly it does not does not get greasy again. Your hair type, the products you use and your environment are what cause this. You can try using dry shampoos in between washes to allow you to go for longer without washing it. I don't know where you are from but in the UK there is a brand called Batiste which is great but I'm sure any chemist e.g. Boots, Superdrug etc would sell something similar wherever you are. Dry shampoos work in a similar way to the baby/talcum powder tricks mentioned by other posters but these are designed for hair and often have a lovely smell too.
  • I actually think that washing it every day will eventually make it even greasier, so you're ok there. Like has been mentioned, try a dry shampoo in-between washes. Also try not to play with it, or brush it too much.
  • I used to have to wash my hair every two days for that reason. But.. then I started waiting an extra day (I tried it out when I was on holiday so would not see people) and then went an extra day. I can now wash it every three/four days, and it is fine. I reckon I could go 5 days, but that would really mess up my weekly routine (wash hair on Monday and Thursday - If I waited 5 days, it would be Monday, Friday, Wednesday, Monday etc) I had heard that if you do not wash your hair at all, it will eventually regain all its silkiness and will never need washing again (other than rinsing with water, and brushing). I would love to try that, but need to wait until I have a significant time off before I cna give it a go. I did try it once for 11 days - after the first week it did not get any greasier, but on the 12th day, I had to go out, and was not prepared to be seen like that *LOL*
  • - Brushing your hair about 10 times per day will cause the your strands to be oily and greasy. - When washing your hair, use a clarifying shampoo. It will remove the oils in your hair. It removes the build-up in your hair. - Don't wash your hair everyday. - Change your pillowcase.
  • you might just have oily hair - good luck
  • First Your dermotologist should check your scalp to see if you have seborreac (Sp.) dermatitis? It is a condition that can cause hair loss eventually due to the oils in your hair and the dandruff clogging the shaft. Otherwise it is either just naturally your hair type or it could just be hormonal? Wash your scalp with a good detergent shampoo and only put conditioner on the very ends rather than all over. Rinse upside down so as not to get the conditioner on the roots. Sometimes you simply have to wash everyday. No way around it any of the drying products on the market are bad for your folicles.
