'Avatar' is a Sanskrit word meaning the present form of life a person's soul has taken. It would also mean the incarnations that God may take in the form of humans or other life forms on this earth. When the word got into the English language and computer jargon - it came to mean the profile image a person chooses for the time being. I think the original Sanskrit word meaning and the contemporary sense in which it is used correlate very well.
