    The border was made in 1828 when the Dutch claimed it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_New_Guinea). The Dutch handed over control to Indonesia during the 1950's. The status of the western (Indonesian) side is controversial, as procedures for settling land claims were never performed.
