  • There's so much history behind henna, arguably the world's oldest cosmetic, that you could read about it for days. And you can find a good chunk of it here: http://hennapage.com/ But in short, henna's been around as a cosmetic for many thousands of years, all throughout north Africa, the middle east, and east Asia. There are dozens of cultures with traditional henna patterns. Some are for certain occasions, like weddings or pregnancies, some are markers of religious rites or holidays, and some display rank or trade. Indian weddings often have peacocks in their intricate henna patterns, Persian henna can often be recognized by repeating floral designs, African patterns are often geometric. Then there's the fact that you can turn any symbol into a henna pattern, which makes henna all the more fun.
