Hindu religion has, amongst its many holy books those known as sutra's, or sutram. they are basically manuals on how to put Hinduism into practice in daily life. The Kamasturam is how to express your Hinduism while engaged in erotic love. (kama=desire) It was written or collected by a sage called Vatsyayana in about the 4thc AD, according to tradition. It derives from an older work the Kama Shastra, which was attributed to Nandi the sacred bull (and Shiva's door keeper), after he had overheard Shiva and Parvati his wife making love. it has 36 chapters, and seven parts, showing various sexual positions, and giving points on them and hints on how to achieve more pleasure. It was translated into English in 1883 by the traveller Sir Richard Burton (not the actor!), who discovered one of the sources of the Nile and Lake victoria and seized upon in the 1960s by alternative lifestylers such as the hippie movement.

Kama Sutra is a book explaining and diagraming many, many different sexual positions. It's kind of like a "self help" book. There's many different versions: the original, the illustrated pocket handbook, etc. It's actually pretty cool...and tons of fun.
