  • not that she was running away, but they lived out in the country and they let her roam around.
  • Lassie was always in some kind of adventure that takes her away from her home. Hence, "Lassie come home".
  • What kind of show would it have been if all she did was sit around at home? "Lassie, wake up!" doesn't sound as good.
  • She wasn't really running away. It's just that Timmy was usually getting lost or into some other trouble and Lassie had to compensate for the negligence of his parents. ;) In essence she was the most functional member of a dysfunctional family. :)
  • they didn't want lassie to be a dog, the poor thing, she ran away to be with others of her own kind . that had to be the most stressed out dog known to man if u think about it
  • Lassie was a poor victim of bestiality at home, I saw it on a behind the scenes show a few years ago. Eventually turned to heroin to deal with the pain. Very sad.
  • Lassie did not run away. She was a good dog. No, people kept falling in wells and she kept having to get them out.
  • If you really wanta know, I'll tell ya. 'Lassie Come Home' was the title of the 1943 movie( from book of same name) that introduced 'Lassie' to the public. Poor Yorkshire family must sell boy's (Roddy McDowel) beloved dog to rich cold hearted Duke ( Nigel Bruce, aka Dr Watson), with help of Duke's grandaughter (Liz Taylor) Lassie (Pal)escapes, movie follows her long dangerous trek from Scotland back to Yorkshire. Journey also serves as a segue for stories about various people she encounters along way. Been described as a '12 tissue' tear jerker. Lassie became instant celebrity(number of purebred collies registered in US jumped from 3,000 to 18,400, no record of no. collies abandoned soon after. Collies are not easy care pets. same thing happened with Dalmations, also not EZ, after Disney's movies, now same will happen with Port. water dogs, also not EZ). Manymany 'sequels', from 1943-2005, radio (!) show '43, TV '53-'73 diff 'owners' and settings, one season '89 with Timmy now grown. So N E way... especially poignant & popular scene in original movie; despondent boy climbs hill, shouts into wind "Lassie come home!" pan of wind over Yorkshire moors, fade to pan of winds over Scot. highlands to Lassie in pen, who perks up ears and begins journey. The shout was so recognizable that it was used to open radio show and original TV, pre-Timmy, episodes. Hence, "Lassie Come Home!" {A sequel never made; Boy( Roddy Mac) shouts out to the hills, Shane (Alan Ladd) comes galloping back, then rides to Scotland, kills evil Duke(John Wayne) and returns Lassie(Rin Tin Tin). Boy fights other boy(Brandon De Wilde) over dog to no avail as Liz Taylor gets custody of dog in 17th divorce settlement. ORRRRRR...Tho 'Lassie' is a female, she has been portrayed by males since Pal in the original 1943 movie.Sumpin about the hot lights make females shed too much.(She was pro'lly played by a recording on radio.) As far as is known, none of the canine thespians who played Lassie, were Gay old dogs, but this was in the days (pre- Rock Hudson)when such a rumor could ruin a stars career. Not until “Some Like It Hot” could a serious actor get away with appearing in drag. So “Lassie' was not out roaming the country or diving into wells, instead of Lassie Come Out, he was hiding in the closet.
  • Poor Lassie! I always felt Timmy, her owner was kinda a dumb-ass.
  • What do you think???Lassie was really a male dog and everyone kept calling "her" and Lassie...(Talk about a identity crisis in the 1950's).I'd run away too If everytime I turned around Timmy was doing some stupid shit, and all you hear is "GO GET HELP GIRL"Just imagine not even being able to hike your leg to take a leak...
