oh yeah. Perhaps we should combine that with herding goats. How often do you hear about out of control, drugged teen goat herders?

wow... that would make a fantastic sequel to the choldren's book: Heidi!

I think there's a big difference between trained and domesticated. Almost any animal can be trained to a degree. Dangerous idea to ever consider them domesticated though.. In the first example on that page, the day that farmer forgets to give that Hyena the herbs to curb sexual desire or the hyena realizes the livestock is edible could be very ugly.

True. The chimp that tore that woman's face off had grown up from infancy with humans. Not domesticated though.

It's sad that we need those kind of reminders every now and then. It really amazes me when some couple is "shocked" that their 10 foot python decided that their baby was food.

I don't know and I don't know. And I'm not testing to find out. :)

In my experience with wild animals, both carnivorous and herbivorous, I have found that any animal can be tamed if its primary instinct to look for food can be satisfied by us.
Hyenas are but opportunistic carnivores and by satisfying their food needs and eliminating their need to hunt for food - they could be tamed and domesticated.
A few generations of domestication and hyenas could be as good a pet as a dog - subject to limitations of its intelligence.

Apparently so. But having seen a YouTube video of a group of hyenas circling in and driving three full-grown African lions away from a kill, I will leave the domestication to others. :)

They hunt as a pack. Lions actually fear them. But in the wild they must survive. I too have no intention of domesticating a Hyena, Jim.

Yeah, I ran across a picture of guys in Kenya with hyenas on leashes. Spooky looking stuff.
