australian shepherds can be really any size but if you are looking for a particular size then you should probally look at the parents size. Australian shepherds are not always born without tails too. this gene is hereditary and it is advised to not breed two parents that were born without tails because this increases their chances of spinal problems. your dog could very well be an australian shepherd or it might be mixed with a border collie or maybe part catahoula lepord dog who also can have the merle gene. best luck with your investigation lol. hope this helps:)

I have an Aussie with a tail (we're not allowed to dock any more in the UK). Aussie's tails are covered in thick fur with lots of feathering, and they carry them quite high - my boy's tail often stands straight up in the air with the white tip waving like a flag :) Good for locating him in fields of crops! You can always get him DNA tested to determine precisely what breed he is if you really want to know for sure(search the internet for "Animal DNA Testing"). Good luck!
