No - he just has to convince everyone that he is...
The Pope also holds the position of Bishop of Rome. The Church requires its Bishops to take a vow of celibacy. I'll leave it at that.
Saint Peter, whose mother-in-law is mentioned in the Bible as having been miraculously healed (Mat 8:15). Peter (Cephas) was also shown to be married (leading about a wife) during his apostleship in Paul's first letter to the Corinthians (9:5).
Pope St. Hormisdas (514–523) was married and widowed before ordination. He was the father of Pope Saint Silverius.[2]
Pope Adrian II (867–872) was married, before taking orders, and had a daughter.[citation needed]
Pope John XVII (1003) was married before his election to the papacy and had three sons, who all became priests[3]
Pope Clement IV (1265–1268) was married, before taking holy orders, and had two daughters.[4]
Pope Honorius IV (1285–1287) was married before he took the Holy Orders and had at least two sons. He entered the clergy after his wife died, the last pope to have been married.
And these are just a few! This list doesn't include Popes who had sex, after reciving their Holy orders!
I couldn't care less. He can be daffy duck if he wants to be.
I know he has to do some miracle.
To be a pope you have to be a virgin? OMG. That's it I'm crossing out pope on my to be list. Seriously I have one. I was actually considering to be a pope. NOT ANYMORE. THANKS FOR TELLING ME.
Looking at the past history of the Papacy, I shouldn't think so.If Apostles could have marriages, why not Bishops?
The vow is not about Virginity. The vow is Celibacy.
It's not about NEVER having had sex, it's about having sex NOW and in the future.
Reality? Celibacy is sworn by many who do not honor it. It is not singular to the Catholic religion, it is a tradition which is known from early recorded history.
It was believed that celibacy brought one closer to the spiritual world. In pan-theistic Rome, virgins might live in temple.
Today, one makes the celibacy pledge as a sacrifice, as well as remaining celibate to 'gather strength of the spirit'.
In many cultures, to be celibate elevates the authority of spiritual power. Catholicism simply took it a step further by requiring celibacy of it's priests and nuns.
No he doesn't have to be a virgin. He just has to take a vow of celebecy and abstain from sex while serving the Catholic church. It's the same deal for priests and nuns too.
IN that case, there will not be any pope in vatican...
No, the pope can be a husband of one wife, as can priests and bishops.
